Reading INtroduction

'A room without books is like a body without a soul.' - Marcus Tullius Cicero

We are proud to promote a love of reading at Norton Hill Primary, with carefully curated displays of books featured throughout the school to inspire and engage our children. Since the school's opening, our Headteacher has used books to bring both soul and learning opportunities to areas that were once blank walls.

As you walk around the school, you will discover books covering a wide range of topics and themes, ready to be explored by children and adults alike. We have been deeply committed to ensuring that our collection is representative of the diverse cultures, experiences and events that make up our school, our community and the wider world.

We believe it is crucial to provide children with access to a variety of perspectives as they develop their understanding of the world around them. Through our carefully chosen collection, we aim to foster curiosity, empathy and a lifelong love of reading.

Books around our school!

Libraries

At Norton Hill Primary, we are fortunate to have two fantastic library spaces for our children. Downstairs, our KS1 and lower KS2 library features cosy reading nooks and a wide selection of age-appropriate books for pupils in Reception to Year 3. Upstairs, we have recently established a fabulous upper KS2 library, complete with comfortable seating and an abundance of books to discover, enjoy and devour!

As the school continues to grow, we have consciously made a continued effort to replenish books and we frequently audit this alongside feedback from the children. We love to see our libraries in action as safe and cosy places that help foster a love of reading.

Starbooks

A few years ago, we opened our very popular 'Starbooks Cafe' at Norton Hill Primary School. Starbooks Cafe provides families with a space to enjoy reading with their children whilst enjoying a hot beverage and a biscuit (or two!). We strive to foster a love of reading within our children and found that Starbooks sessions enabled families to be part of this. Starbooks is ran termly and offered across a range of year groups.

Birthday Books

We often get requests from parents asking if they can bring sweets into school to celebrate their child’s birthday. As a healthy eating school our policy is that we do not support the sharing of sweets. However, we do recognise that birthdays are an important event in the lives of the children at our school, and they enjoy sharing their celebrations with their school friends. For those who would like to share something with their friends in school we are starting up a ‘Birthday Book’ corner in our school library.

If you wanted to celebrate your child’s birthday with their school friends, you could purchase a book for their classroom’s Birthday Book corner. The book you purchase can be enjoyed by your child and their classmates all year round.

We are currently updating our wishlists for the next academic year. Watch this space!

World Book Day/Vocabulary Day

To celebrate World Book Day this year, we invited children to dress as a word to enhance their vocabulary. We participated in a range of events including a vocabulary parade! Children spoke about their words throughout the day. As you can see, it was a very fun day for all.
